The UMare herd is the group of Standardbred mares currently owned by the University of Maine. Although the group is called the "UMares," there is also a resident stallion (or "UMan") on the farm, named Roadshow Hall.  The horses reside at UMaine's Witter Farm, where students take classes and the public can visit.  All of the horses at the farm were donated to the university after their racing careers (whether short or long) ended.  Students from the university help to retrain the mares as they make their transitions from race horse to riding horse.  It is the ultimate goal that the UMares will be sold to forever homes.  The program has had a long history, with many different horses coming through. Many UMares have gone on to become wonderful mounts in a wide variety of disciplines. Standardbreds are athletic and willing and one of these mares could be your next show champion or family companion.
